Dysport vs. Botox: Which Injectable Wrinkle Treatment Is Right for You?

If your treatment plan includes wrinkle relaxers (or you're looking at getting into them), you might know Botox as the OG, but Botox is far from the only name in the game when it comes to neurotoxins. Dysport has been gaining popularity as a fast-acting, natural-looking alternative, and many patients ask us the same question: what is the actual difference when it comes to Dysport vs Botox?
Both are neuromodulators made from botulinum toxin type A, and both work by temporarily relaxing the muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles, the ones that form from repeated expressions like smiling, squinting, or frowning. But how they are formulated, how quickly they work, and how they spread once injected can make one a better fit than the other, depending on your goals.
Here is what you need to know if evaluating the differences between Dysport and Botox.
How Dysport and Botox Are Similar
Both treatments:
Target the same muscle groups (forehead lines, crow's feet, frown lines)
Are FDA-approved for cosmetic use
Take effect gradually and are not permanent
Require a licensed injector for safe, precise placement
Produce results that typically last three to four months
If you have had success with one, that does not mean the other will not work well for you. Many patients actually switch between the two over time, or ask their injector which is better suited to a specific area.
The Key Differences
Onset time. Dysport tends to show results faster than Botox, sometimes within two to three days, compared to Botox's typical five-to-seven-day onset. If you have an event coming up and are cutting it close on timing, this can matter.
Molecule size and spread. Dysport has a smaller molecular structure, which allows it to diffuse slightly more across the treatment area. This can be an advantage for larger areas like the forehead, where broader, more even coverage is the goal. Botox's more concentrated spread can be preferable for smaller, more precise areas, like fine lines around the eyes.
Dosing units. Dysport and Botox are not measured the same way. A Dysport unit is not equivalent to a Botox unit, so if you are comparing pricing between providers, unit counts alone will not tell you much. What matters is the total treatment cost and the experience of your injector.
Look and feel. Some patients describe Dysport results as slightly softer, while Botox is often described as giving a more targeted freeze. Neither is objectively better. It comes down to the area being treated and the result you are after.
Which One Is Right for You?
This really depends on your anatomy, your goals, and how your body responds to each formulation. A few general starting points:
Dysport may be a good fit if:
You want to treat larger areas like the forehead
You are looking for quicker onset ahead of an event
You have used Botox before but did not love how it settled
Botox may be a good fit if:
You are targeting smaller, more precise areas like crow's feet
You have used it successfully in the past with results you loved
You prefer a treatment with the most established, longest track record
The honest answer is that there is no universal winner. What works beautifully for one patient's forehead lines might not be the right choice for another patient's crow's feet. This is why an in-person consultation matters so much, we are not just picking a product, we are mapping a plan to your face.
Our Dysport and Botox Approach
At Evolving Aesthetics, we do not default to one product for every patient. During your consultation, we evaluate your muscle strength, the areas you want treated, your previous experience with neuromodulators (if any), and your goals for how natural or dramatic you want the result to be. From there, we recommend the option, or combination of options, that will get you there.
Some patients even do well with both, Dysport in one area and Botox in another, depending on what each area needs.
Ready to Find Your Fit?
Whether you are new to neuromodulators or looking to switch things up from your usual treatment, we will walk you through your options and build a plan around your face, not a one-size-fits-all formula.
